Wood paint and wood fillers will fix your damaged wood but it is wood varnish that will protect and enhance your wooden surfaces for years to come. Wood varnish really enhances the natural beauty of your wood grain and protects it against knocks, scuffs and scratches.
Certain superior kinds of wood varnish formulations deliver superior protection against heat, scratches and water. This enhances the wood and gives it long lasting protection against all kinds of daily impacts including harsh household chemicals. There are also perfect finish varnishes available that will make sure that no marks are left behind. This kind of varnish has a smooth pad that brushes the varnish along effortlessly and more quickly than a brush, also meaning that no bristles can be left behind in the finish.
There are many varnishes available to suit your taste, with varying options on colour to suit your wood, as well as finishes varying from glossy to matt. The better quality wood varnish has UV filters that protect the finish from yellowing, and the colour from fading.
Before you start applying the wood varnish you need to read through carefully so you are able to ensure that your wood is fully protected.
1. Ensure all surfaces are free from wax, grease and oil by wiping down with white spirit. Whatever the project, a perfect finish starts with perfect preparation.
2. Protect areas with dusts sheets or alternative covering and always ensure the room is well ventilated.
3. On bare wood, sand smooth with fine sandpaper and remove dust with a cloth. Do not use wire wool.
4. Apply 2-3 coats, brushing out evenly and finish each coat in the direction of the grain.
5. Leave 1 hour between coats, although in certain conditions, the varnish may take longer to dry.
6. Make sure you stir the can carefully with something simple that will not affect the colour or the quality of the varnish. This is important, as the varnish may have separated over time, meaning the colour is likely to differ.
7. Gently stroking it along horizontally is the best way to go about with the application process. If you are varnishing chairs or tables, start with the inner complicated areas and then work your way through so you get the perfect finish. Always stick with the direction of the grain for the professional finish.
8. It is recommended to not stop in between when you pull your smooth strokes. If one side of the layer is thinner than other, your surface wont look professional.
9. Always be quick and careful when you apply the strokes. Do pay extra attention to the corners.
10. Lightly rub down using 180 grade sandpaper and wipe with a cloth before the final coat.
