New research by Westbury Windows & Joinery, the UK-based designer and manufacturer of standard and bespoke windows and doors, shows that white is the most popular colour for wood front doors or entrance doors in the UK today. Natural stained and/or varnished finishes are the second most popular choice with black in third place.

Other traditional colours such as Oxford Blue, Racing Green and Postbox Red were next most prevalent, followed by paler hues such as greys, Celadon Greens and Duck Egg Blues.

Jonathan Hey, managing director, Westbury Joinery said: When you open a front door or entrance door, it is said that you shake hands with the house, so to make a good first impression a house needs a solid, well maintained door that is in-keeping with the style of the property. Whether you are selling your property or just want to make guests feel welcome, selecting the right colour, style and material cannot be overlooked.

Tips for choosing the right door and colour:

????Invest: See the door as an investment and dont scrimp on the budget – a solid timber, high quality door will convey a lot about the rest of the property, as well as providing far greater security than cheaper alternatives.

????Colour: Select colour with caution – traditional tones are appealing to most people but anything too contemporary or unique could be a turn off. Gloss works best for most doors. If you live in a listed building or conservation area, it is worth checking whether you need permission to change the colour of your entrance door.

????Paint: Ensure the entire door receives three coats of paint – this will ensure that it does not rot, warp, expand or shrink.

????Furniture: Choose door furniture with care and to complement the chosen colour – chrome finishes look best on contemporary doors whereas brass suits most traditional colours.

????Style: Match the door style (panelling, glass insets) to the property and in a modern new build property, consider whether you can accommodate a double-fronted door as this helps a property look more spacious. If your property has no specific heritage then you can choose any style but traditional designs still work best in most settings.

????Fan Lights: Match your door style with clerestory otherwise known as fan lights. These sit above the door and create a feeling of grandeur as well as allowing light to permeate the hall area behind.

????Maintenance: A badly kept front door will reflect badly on the property within. However, a high quality new door will require little maintenance other than a regular clean and repainting every 5-6 years.

How do I remove scraped white wall paint on the 2 arms of a nice chair?

Question by renz1974: How do I remove scraped white wall paint on the 2 arms of a nice chair?
The wood is varnished and my fiance’s chair. I scraped white paint from the door frame on the top of the arms moving out of a room. She is going to kill me if I dont clean this off. Any help?

try washing with Murphy’s soap and hot water. then rub the arms with lemon-oil to bring back the shine on the varnish.
Don’t you cover furniture before you scrape or paint things?

How can I tell if my folding fan is Japanese or Chinese? Is it authentic?

Question by Naya: How can I tell if my folding fan is Japanese or Chinese? Is it authentic?
I recently purchased a folding fan, still in box, from a thrift store. The box itself has a sticker on the front and one on the side, but the characters are of an Oriental language. So, I can’t read them. Once fully opened, the scene on the fan itself is of 2 koi-fish, or carp(I’m not sure which), and there is also what appears to be some kind of trademark stamped on it, with some characters written out next to it. The scene is beautifully done, whether printed on or painted. There are 19 ribs, including the wider ribs on either end, that look to be bamboo, and they are painted or varnished in a lovely dark color. I can’t tell whether or not this is an authentic hand-crafted piece, or if it is just your run-of-the-mill mass-produced tourist souvenier. I’d love to know, whether or not it’s authentic, and perhaps if it is, whether or not it’s an antique. Thanks so much! icon smile How can I tell if my folding fan is Japanese or Chinese? well all fans of that type are japaneese but since china is a mass producer of everything you really cant tell…
for your help i put in the types of hand fans..

Dansen uchiwa (????, Dansen uchiwa?) were large iron fans, sometimes built on a wooden core, which were carried by high-ranking officers. They were used to ward off arrows, as a sunshade, and to signal to troops.
Gunsen (??, Gunsen?) were folding fans used by the average warriors to cool themselves off. They were made of bronze, brass or a similar metal for the inner spokes, and often used iron for the outer spokes, making them lightweight but strong. Warriors would hang their fans from a variety of places, most typically from the belt or the breastplate, though the latter often impeded the use of a sword or a bow.
Saihai (??, Saihai?) were tasseled signalling fans which would be used by a commander to signal troop movements.
Tessen (??, Tessen?) were folding fans with outer spokes made of iron which were designed to look like regular, harmless folding fans or solid clubs shaped to look like a closed fan. Samurai could take these to places where swords or other overt weapons were not allowed, and some swordsmanship schools included training in the use of the tessen as a weapon. The tessen was also used for fending off arrows and darts, as a throwing weapon, and as an aid in swimming, like hand-flippers

compare the oriental characters and see… good luck!
