Question by doris: how do you remove varnish that has not dried?
Recently moved into this new house and the garage door has sticky varnish on it. I want to repaint it, how do I remove this old sticky varnish please.
The varnish was put on by the last owner and it has been that way for a long time being sticky, he must of used old outdated varnish

I scrubed down the doors with a TSP solution and fine grit foam sandind blocks. I then rinsed them, wiped them down and allowed them time to air-dry. They are now visible dull but sqeaky clean and smooth to the touch. Are they ready for a primer/paint 2-step procedure? -(Originally clear varnish over stained oak rails and styles with solid luan panels.)

having used nail varnish remover we managed to remove most of it but some has been left in a smudge and has been resistant to both the nail varnish remover. Any advice on removing the smudge?

I would try Goo-Off. It can remove just about anything from hard surfaces.

actually its my neighbors cat. You see I was doing some research on bath tubs and hand held blow driers and the cat volunteered to help and well…he never made it. So now I’m covering him with 5 coats of varnish so I can us him to hold open a door that won’t stay open.Am I wasting my time or will it be enough weight to hold it open?

Dward, where can i find some of this fume-free E-Z Off oven cleaner stuff? Im in the uk btw. I’ve searched the net and cant find any at all.

I Re-Varnished this front door located at 267 E Caroline in Tempe Arizona. How this door refinisher varnishes the carved portion of a front door. This the second coat of varnish being applied. I put a little color into this varnish to balance the high and low colors in the door.

One week ago, my condo board notified me that I have until Nov. 1 to restain & varnish my exterior oak door (I live in a garden level condo with a separate entrance). I live in Chicago, and the weather is starting to turn much colder. Why they couldn’t have mentioned this in August, I do not no.

Anyway, my question is how to restain the door in cold weather while keeping it on the hinges as much as the time as possible.

The door is oak with wood panels, but no additional detail. The board has specified Minwax Red Oak stain and marine varnish for uniformity, so I have to use those materials.

sand it off and rough it up….apply some new colored polyurethane and be done with it until the weather warms up.
