Question by lalo64: how do i varnish without getting bubbles on the surface? Is a foam applicator better than a brush?

Question by Christmas Fan: How can I make a wooden threshold look better? I have already tried a coat of varnish?
The threshold of my front door looked weatherbeaten and discolored (waterstained?). I applied a fresh coat of varnish (same color as original– a blonde wood color) and you can still see the dark waterstains. The overall appearance of the threshold (before and after new varnish) is an uneven color. Any suggestions? Thanks.
