Should i put a varnish/finish on a flat latex painted coffee table?

Question by Dr. Steve: Should i put a varnish/finish on a flat latex painted coffee table?
I just painted an old coffee table with a flat latex paint, it seem to be picking up a lot of scuff marks and dust (the paint is dry). Should i put a finish coat of something on it to protect it? if so what?

The first mistake is using a latex paint on a piece of furniture.

A second mistake would be to varnish it.

Strip it and start over with a a quality oil-based paint or high-quality acrylic paint.

What paint should I use to decorate a white wooden bookshelf?

Question by : What paint should I use to decorate a white wooden bookshelf?
It’s already been painted white, and I want to paint quotes on the sides and edges.

What kind of paint should I use, and what paintbrush is best? Do I need to prep the surface and do I need to seal or varnish it afterwards?

Thanks!
Edit: I mean what type of paint (e.g. oil or water based), not what colour. Also, re paint pens – what do they look like and where can I look for them? Are there any brands you’d recommend?

It all depends on what color the rest of your house is and what color would go with the book shelf.

But me… I perfer a light brown color, but not too light because i believe that color goes with every wall color.

Hope that helps.

How much approximately should a rifle-smith charge to refinish and/or re-bed a .35 rem rifle stock?

Question by : How much approximately should a rifle-smith charge to refinish and/or re-bed a .35 rem rifle stock?
Just received an early 60′s Marlin Glenfield Mod 30 in .35 cal. It’s an heirloom/keepsake/memento as it was my wife’s fathers hunting rifle. So the stock is nicely scuffed but seemingly to my untrained eye undamaged. Looks like it would need some nice sanding work and some coats of varnish.

Also since I have yet to shoot it and it is about 50 years old, not yet knowing its accuracy, once I do, I wondered if I should have it bedded. I am not an expert on bedding so do not know if I should look into glass bedding, pillar bedding or any other types listed:
* Full contact bedding of the action with the barrel floated.
* Full contact bedding of the action and the barrel.
* Full contact bedding of the action with a pressure-bearing pad for the barrel.
* Pillar bedding of the action with the barrel floated.
* Full length aluminum action bedding block.
I don’t even know if because it is a lever action if it can be free floated. What does the cost associated with bedding range and what do you experts think? Obviously it isn’t a long range gun. I assume 100-150 yards with a .35 rem and another 50-75 with Hornady’s LeverEvolution and a scope for my 41 yr old eyes. Speaking of scopes, what would be an ideal power and objective for this range gun?

What about changing the stock completely? Any other mods or updates can I do to accurize if necessary? Also bear in mind the rifle is probably not worth more than $ 200 if I am lucky.

Not much can be done with lever guns. They can’t be pillar bedded, or barrels free floated due to the front block that attaches the fore end to the barrel and the nature of 2 piece stocks. (Your gun may not have a barrel band – I don’t think some, or all model 30′s had ‘em)

To have a gunsmith re-finish the 2 part stock set, and glass bed the butt stock to fit the action perfectly will cost you about $ 125 – $ 200.

A Hot re-blue adds about another $ 175 – $ 250, Having the gun “Duracoated adds about $ 125 – $ 175

You could have the action “smoothed” out. This costs about $ 60 – $ 125 but shooting the rifle yourself will accomplish the same thing.

Re-finishing the stock is easily done by someone with basic high school wood working skills. So I would recommend doing it yourself if you are at all capable or interested in doing so.

Having a recoil pad added, something I think would be nice on a .35 cal, costs about $ 40 plus the cost of the pad.
